A smile. A hot bowl of soup. A little respect. These are the ingredients served up at the Salvation Army’s Soup Kitchen by the Hi-Way Pentecostal Church volunteers who, for the past decade, have prepared lunch for Barrie’s homeless and marginalized residents. It is just one way in which members of the congregation can truly be Jesus’ hands and feet. It is not enough to simply be fed, one must in turn feed the hungry – both literally and figuratively. For the people who call Hi-Way their church home that act comes in all forms. It could mean volunteering at the Soup Kitchen, or with the Out of the Cold Program, collecting food for the Barrie Food Bank, donating funds to the Women & Children’s Shelter, Teen Parent Program, Youth Haven Food Program, visiting the elderly or frail. We want to be seen not as a group cloistered away but as an active member of the community. We do this by offering our facilities for public events such as the Kiwanis Music Festival, Barrie Concert Series and Christian Horizons. We host an Annual Community Fun Fair free of charge, and participate in the Global Day of Prayer. At Hi-Way, Sunday is our day of celebration. |
